Amplified Spontaneous Emission in low dimensional lead halide perovskites: An overview

Abstract

Lead halide perovskites are receiving large attention due to their potential use as active materials in a wide range of electronic, optoelectronic and photonic devices. Among this wide family of materials quasi-two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites show improved stability and higher photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield with respect to their 3D counterparts. They are formed by quantum well (QW) structures with inorganic lead halide layers comprised between organic bulky spacers, which determine environmental and operational stability to the perovskite. In particular, the recent evidence of optical gain, Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) and optically pumped lasing propose these materials as potentially interesting innovative active materials for laser applications. In this work we review the main results on the ASE properties of quasi-2D perovskites and on the understanding of their basic photophysics, in order to describe the current state of the art of the research in this field.
