Abstract

Arthritis contributes to poor physical and mental health outcomes, reduced ability to work, and personal financial burden. A mixed-methods study was conducted to examine the impacts of living with arthritis on younger, working-age adults, where these specific issues are prominent. It was found that working-age adults with arthritis avoid certain professions due to physical symptoms, and experience lost productivity in the workplace. They also bear high personal costs for arthritis-related healthcare, and experience high levels of financial distress. These findings can raise awareness of the broader personal impacts of arthritis beyond pain and support the provision of person-centred care.
