Abstract
- The following learning module is a teaching tool meant to introduce medical students, pediatric residents, internal medicine-pediatric residents, and family medicine residents to critical heart lesions that present in the neonatal period. The primary resources for this lecture are the PowerPoint presentation entitled “Critical Heart Lesions in the Neonate,” the supplemental teaching guide, and the grading rubric. The PowerPoint presentation is meant to act as an outline and guide for this lecture, with supplemental information provided by the lecturer. The lecture should take 40-45 minutes. In order to determine the lecture's effectiveness, medical students and residents were surveyed over 4 consecutive academic years from 2010-2014 following completion of the lecture. Student responses to presentation organization and usefulness, appropriateness to level of training, and efficacy of teaching were assessed via the use of a 5-point grading rubric. The results of these evaluations were used to improve lecture content and adjust learning objectives to the target audience. From 2010-2014, a total of 76 medical students and general pediatric and internal medicine-pediatric residents evaluated the lecture. Presentation organization received a mean score of 4.87 (SD = 0.34), topic relevance a mean score of 4.93 (SD = 0.25), and presentation appropriateness for level of training a mean score of 4.87 (SD = 0.34). Achievement of outlined objectives received a mean score of 4.86 (SD = 0.39) and efficacy of teaching a mean score of 4.89 (SD = 0.31). Learners agreed with continuing this presentation in the future, giving the question a mean score of 4.91 (SD = 0.29). Scores remained consistent over the 4 years, without significant variation in mean scores or standard deviations.
