Abstract

A birefringence phenomenon is used to construct Boolean logic gates that output three logic functions. Logic gate modules are proposed that consist of Bi12SiO20 opto-optical birefringence switches, LiNbO3 electro-optical half-wave plates, and calcite plates. The gate can be driven by optical inputs and can also be electrically programmed for different logic operations. An array-packed solid-state module is described.
