Variations sur la systématique mertonienne de la théorie sociologique

Le statut et les fonctions de la théorie sociologique sont d’inévitables sujets de discussion dans la discipline. Rien d’étonnant à cela, puisqu’il en va de la scientificité de cette dernière, de son ambition à monter en généralité et à unifier aussi. Cet article vise à actualiser cette problématique à partir des propositions faites par Robert K. Merton, lesquelles n’ont rien perdu de leur pertinence. La perspective « systématique » que le sociologue introduit dans Social Theory and Social Structure (1949) permet ainsi d’évaluer les prétentions théoriques de même qu’elle stimule une forme de réflexivité. Elle rafraîchit également l’exercice de l’interprétation théorique, sans verser dans le culte de la théorie à distance du travail empirique. Enfin, elle rend attentif à la cumulativité dans l’ordre des savoirs sur la société. Systématiser la systématique, tel est donc le chemin que nous proposons d’emprunter ici, sans rien cacher des difficultés qu’une telle démarche ne manque pas de soulever. The status and the functions of sociological theory are inevitable topics of discussion within the discipline. This is not surprising, since the scientificity of sociology is at stake, as well as its aspiration to become generalized and unified as a science. This article seeks to address this problem on the basis of the proposals made by Robert K. Merton, which are still highly relevant today. The “systematic” perspective that the sociologist introduced in Social Theory and Social Structure (1949) enables one to evaluate theoretical claims and stimulates a form of reflexivity. It also renews the exercise of theoretical interpretation, without falling into the cult of theory estranged from empirical work. Finally, this approach draws attention to cumulativeness in the process of ordering the knowledge about society. Systematizing systematics is therefore the path we propose to follow here, without hiding the difficulties that such an undertaking inevitably raises.
