Frames according to architectural treatises: interpretation of the manuscript of Rodrigo Álvarez

[EN] The construction of five-plane timber roof frames originated as an evolution of the simpler rafter-couple system in order to cover greater spans. In this article, an interpretation is provided of the procedure that is included in the unpublished manuscript by Rodrigo Álvarez (c. 1674) for such a construction, wherein the consideration of geometric and constructive circumstances is essential. The validity of the empirical procedure indicated by Álvarez for the construction of five-plane timber roof frames that form a regular polygon is verified, in which Álvarez remained indifferent to the interlacing patterns commonly used in these constructions. Furthermore, comparative references to the type of structure that appears in the texts by López de Arenas (1619 and 1633) and Fray Andrés de San Miguel (c. 1640) are included, which contain differing procedures.
[ES] La construcción de armaduras de cubierta de cinco paños se origina como evolución de armaduras de pares a fin de alcanzar la cobertura de mayores luces. En el artículo se interpreta el procedimiento que para tal construcción se incluye en el manuscrito inédito de Rodrigo Álvarez (h. 1674), resultando fundamental la consideración conjunta de circunstancias geométricas y constructivas. Se comprueba su validez para la construcción de armaduras de cinco paños que formen un polígono regular, lo que consigue Álvarez con indiferencia hacia trazados de lacería habituales en estas construcciones. Asimismo se incluyen referencias sobre la misma construcción que aparecen en los textos de Diego López de Arenas (1619 y 1633) y Fray Andrés de San Miguel (h. 1640), y que como veremos utilizan procedimientos muy diferentes.
