Abstract

The veterinary vaccine market is forecast to grow consistently over the next several years [12xVeterinary Vaccines Market to 2017. GBI Research. See all References[12]. Moreover, the vaccine market for companion animals is growing more rapidly than any other animal health sector [13xSee all References[13]. From a technological standpoint, research and innovation will increasingly focus on knowledge-based engineered products and the development of more combination vaccines and marker vaccines. An alternative approach is the application of approved human drugs for veterinary purposes. The Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994 allows veterinarians in the USA to prescribe approved human drugs for animals under certain conditions. This approach is constrained, however, by product costs and by likely immunological reaction of animals to human proteins. Overall, therefore, the field of veterinary biopharmaceuticals is likely to remain distinct from the human biopharmaceutical sector into the future.
