Abstract

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Amedeo Avogadro University of Eastern Piedmont, NovaraDear Sir,Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus8 (KSHV/HHV-8) is involved in the pathogenesis of Kaposi’ssarcoma (KS) and 2 lymphoproliferative diseases, primaryeffusion lymphoma (PEL) and the plasmablastic variant ofmulticentric Castleman’s disease (MCD). PEL is defined as aliquid-phase lymphoma harboring monoclonal rearrangementsof immunoglobulin (Ig) variable genes or, more rarely, of T-cell receptor (TCR) genes. As a rule, these elements are usedfor PEL diagnosis together with the demonstration of HHV-8infection of the tumor clone. However, as pointed out by Bou-langer and colleagues in the 1 July 2005 issue of the Interna-tional Journal of Cancer
