Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop a plant system to purify the indoor air, and accommodate it to room conditions. The research focused on formaldehyde in interaction with plants and room objects. The plants that purified air from formaldehyde in the lab did purify the air in rooms to a small extent. In an enclosed room a set of 10 small plants per m2 purified 7-9% of the applied formaldehyde within the first 15 minutes. After this period, the contribution of plants to formaldehyde was impossible to measure due to disturbances like adsorption to room surfaces and air leaking. These processes disturbed the used indirect method to determine the air purification in rooms, but a better method is not yet available. The current methodology shows that a high number of plants purifies a few percent of the air from formaldehyde within 15 minutes.
