Abstract

This pilot shows that correct recognition of the type of noise is both a sufficient and a necessary condition for reliable monitoring of trend developments of aircraft noise in the outside area of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. A lower limit for the noise levels that can be monitored is estimated to vary between 40 and 45 dB(A) Lden. This followed from a pilot investigation in which noise measurements were carried out at three sites in the outside region of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The measurements were part of a practical research of possibilities for monitoring trend developments in aircraft noise at low levels in areas at large distances from the airport. At each site the measurements were carried out continuously during one month, using various noise measurement systems. For each plane passing by the measurement site, the sound exposure level and the arrival time were recorded simultaneously. After each month, the measured arrival times of the planes according to each measurement system were compared with calculated arrival times using flight track data
