Abstract

This paper describes how the general notion of process theory can provide a foundational component in a portfolio of project management theories. The paper begins by outlining a variety of views pertaining to the nature of theory and theory development. This forms a basis for understanding how theory might be used to enhance the accumulation of project management knowledge. It then discusses in some detail the essential and potential nature of process theory and contrasts process theory with other types of theories. Finally, it situates how process theory may be applied within the project management domain.
