Verbal and Non verbal Representation in TerminologyProceedings of the TOTh 2013 Workshop

International audience; It is a great pleasure to announce an international workshop on the theme of representation of terms and definitions of concepts in verbal as well as nonverbal forms. The ISO standard 704 "Terminology work – principles and methods" mentions three types of designation – terms, appellations and symbols. The last of these constitutes an important aid in international communication by transferring the information directly. The ISO standard 10241-1 “Terminological entries – General requirements and examples of presentation” explicitly mentions the nonverbal representations used instead of definitions. An illustration is sometimes more explicit than a language definition.Verbal and nonverbal representations of concepts show up in a number of terminologies of scientific and technical disciplines. This is especially the case for the activities at the The Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research which show that verbal and nonverbal representations have been used for several millennia. In the field of weaving, in particular, weaving representations for basic and derived weaves are configured in diagrams and logograms, thus collapsing designation and definition. A good example of this phenomenon is the basic weave ”tabby” which can be designated by figures, codes and terms. The TOTh workshop will begin with a presentation of the work of the The Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research about the verbal and nonverbal configurations in the field of textiles, and a presentation on the concept of design as a theoretical framework by the University of Southern Denmark, SDU.; La terminologie mobilise des représentations de termes et des définitions de concepts qui peuvent être aussi bien verbales que non-verbales. Ainsi, la norme ISO 704, portant sur les principes et méthodes terminologiques, cite les trois types de désignation que sont les termes, les appellations et les symboles. Ces derniers « constituent une aide importante pour la communication internationale » en « véhiculant directement les informations ». La norme ISO 10241-1, relative aux « Articles terminologiques dans les normes », parle, quant à elle, explicitement de « représentations non-verbales » « utilisées par convention à la place d'une définition » – une illustration est parfois plus explicite qu’une définition en langue.Les représentations verbales et non-verbales des concepts apparaissent dans de nombreuses terminologies de disciplines scientifiques et techniques. C’est en particulier le cas du domaine des textiles, au cœur des activités du "Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research”, où les représentations verbales/et ou non-verbales sont utilisées depuis plusieurs millénaires. Ainsi, les représentations de tissus se configurent en diagrammes et logogrammes unissant désignation et définition. L’ « armure de toile », qui se résume en figures, codes et termes, en est un exemple.La Journée d’étude TOTh 2013 commencera par la présentation de travaux menés par le "Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research” sur les représentations verbales et non-verbales dans le domaine du textile et une présentation sur le concept de « design » comme cadre de recherche par l’Université de Southern Denmark - SDU.
