Alcatel-HHI collaboration on all-optical 3R regeneration

A collaboration program by the Alcatel and the Heinrich Hertz Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (HHI) in Berlin on the 3R regeneration of optical signals is reported. The 3R defines reamplification, reshaping and retiming. The self-pushing laser designed by HHI was inserted into an Alcatel regenerator in order to study the feasibility of 3R regeneration and cascadability at 10 Gbit/s. The system operating with 40Gbits/s optical generator which incorporates the 40 GHz version of the all-optical all-optical clock recovery is also demonstrated. It is concluded that the self-pulsing laser can be used in all-optical Internet protocol (IP) packets and all-optical network.
