Vida e obra do Professor Doutor Álvaro António Pinheiro Rodrigues

Pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto passaram alguns dos mais importantes médicos e cientistas da História da Medicina portuguesa. O Professor Doutor Álvaro António Pinheiro Rodrigues foi um dos mais ilustres e distintos médicos desta instituição, contribuindo notavelmente para o avanço e desenvolvimento da Medicina. No Museu de História de Medicina “Maximiano Lemos” da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, existe um vasto espólio pessoal e profissional do Professor, doado pela família, que nos permite acompanhar o seu percurso académico, científico, clínico, de gestor hospitalar e de humanista. O Professor Doutor Álvaro Rodrigues terminou o curso geral de Medicina e Cirurgia na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto em 1927. Defendeu a sua dissertação de doutoramento em 1930, pela qual foi reconhecido na comunidade científica nacional e internacional. Dedicou-se à investigação, no âmbito da Anatomia e da Cirurgia Experimental aplicando-se no estudo da disposição do sistema linfático e na linfangiografia. Posteriormente destacou-se pelas suas investigações inovadoras no campo da Oncologia, nomeadamente no esclarecimento do envolvimento do sistema linfático na sua patogenia e tratamento. Foi professor assistente de Anatomia bem como regente das disciplinas de Medicina Operatória e Histologia e Embriologia e foi nomeado Professor Catedrático da disciplina de Clínica Cirúrgica. Consagrou-se no exercício da medicina, pela sua vocação ímpar para a prestação de cuidados de saúde. Distinguiu-se pela sua personalidade humanística e democrata nos cargos de chefia que assumiu, como gestor hospitalar e da faculdade, marcando as instituições e as pessoas com quem trabalhou. The Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, is well known for having received some of the most important doctors and scientists of the Portuguese History of Medicine. Professor Álvaro António Pinheiro Rodrigues was one of the most renowned and notorious Doctor of this institution, having contributed significantly to the advancement and development of Medicine. The Museum of History of Medicine “Maximiano Lemos” in the Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto, inherited some of the professor’s legacy, personal and professional, donated by the family allowing us to follow his career either academic, scientific, clinical, as a hospital manager and humanitarian. Professor Álvaro Rodrigues completed its Medical and surgery general course at the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Porto, in 1927. He supported his thesis in 1930, having been recognized by the national and international scientific community. He devoted himself to Anatomy and Experimental surgery research, focusing on the study of the lymphatic system structure and lymphangiography. Later on, he stood out by its innovative research in oncology, namely in the clarification of the involvement of the lymphatic system in its pathogenesis and treatment. He was assistant professor of Anatomy and regent of surgical Medicine and Histology and Embryology disciplines, having been designated Professor of Clinical surgery. He devoted himself for medical profession, for its unique talent for delivering healthcare. He excelled by his human and democratic character in the leadership positions he took over, as hospital and faculty manager, influencing institutions and the people with whom he worked with.
