The role of metaphors in foreign language teaching

The aim of the paper is to show the importance of metaphors in foreign language teaching. Metaphors, however, are not treated as purely linguistic phenomena but rather as conceptual processes (conceptual metaphor) affecting our reception and organization of the reality, and thus determining human behaviour. Metaphors which influence our understanding of language, communication, and the very process of language learning are to be discussed. The author will also mention those metaphors that hinder the learning process and those that can be used by teachers to improve their relations with students and motivate them to learn. The present work is based on the methodology elaborated within cognitive linguistics and it aims at adapting some of its theoretical solutions for the language teaching. Niniejsze opracowanie ma na celu ukazanie, jak ważne są metafory w procesie nauczania języków obcych. Nie chodzi tu jednak o metaforę jako o zjawisko czysto językowe, ale o proces konceptualny (metafora pojęciowa) wpływający na nasz odbiór i organizację rzeczywistości i tym samym kształtujący nasze zachowania. Omówione zostaną metafory, za pomocą których postrzegamy język i komunikację językową oraz sam proces nauki języka. Ukazane zostaną metafory utrudniające naukę języka oraz takie, które pomagają nauczycielowi w budowaniu poprawnych relacje z uczniami. Praca ta odwołuje się do metodologii wypracowanych w ramach językoznawstwa kognitywnego i ma na celu, przynajmniej częściowe, przeniesienie tychże rozwiązań teoretycznych na grunt metodyki nauczania języków.
