Industrial odors in the city of Izmir, Turkey

In this presentation strengths of selected industrial odor emissions in the city of Izmir, Turkey are submitted. Studied industrial facilities include textile finishing, tobacco (cigarette), food, paint and lacquer, petfood, meat packaging and rendering, olive oil and other vegetable oil extraction facilities and their refineries, prina (reclaimed olive press waste) oil plant, soap and soapstock manufacturing workplaces. Urban wastewater treatment plant of Izmir and four large pumphouses of the wastewater collection system were also studied for odor emissions and control. These industries were chosen on the basis of complaints from urban dwellers. Samples of emitted odorous gases were taken into nalophene bags and carried to the olfactometry laboratory of the Department of Environmental Engineering. Sampling and analyses were carried out within the next 24 hours in accordance with prEN 13725 and VDI 3881. Some of the samples had to be prediluted. Statistical procedure for measurements and evaluations was in accordance with CEN 1999. Results of emission tests were tabulated and discussed. Ambient odor levels around the vegetable oil refinery and meat packaging and rendering plants are also plotted and evaluated.
