The 'indestructibility' of primitive : anachronism in the art history of Aby Warburg

En este trabajo de investigación se analiza la manera innovadora en la que Aby Warburg se aproximó a la historia del arte. Como se mostrará, la historia propuesta por Warburg corresponde a una historia despojada de la tradición historicista, es una historia, de acuerdo con Nietzsche, para la vida misma. Esta propuesta se centra en identificar las latencias de las imágenes en el tiempo, a través de las cuales se manifiesta el pasado, lo antiguo, lo pagano y, en particular, lo primitivo. De esta forma, la tesis que se propone en esta investigación corresponde a que una aproximación a la historia del arte propuesta por Warburg se da a través del análisis de las manifestaciones de los estados primitivos “indomables”, como manifestaciones anacrónicas. A través de estas manifestaciones se configuran elementos pictóricos que dotan de significado el mundo. La representación de estos elementos pictóricos en las obras de arte le otorgan significado y emocionalidad que, sin importar la cultura o el tiempo en el que se manifieste, hacen posible la comprensión y empatía que se tiene con la obra artística. El trabajo finaliza con un análisis de la obra de la artística colombiana Débora Arango en el cual, siguiendo la propuesta de Warburg, se rastrea los rasgos primitivos y paganos, tematizados en la investigación del historiador de Hamburgo. In this paper I analyze Aby Warburg’s innovative approach to art history. I will develop on the idea that his approach to history is devoid of the historicist tradition and in such sense, it agrees with Nietzsche’s view on history for the sake of life. I will focus on the identification of the latencies of images in time and further stress how the past, the ancient, the pagan and particularly the primitive manifest through these latencies. I will argue that the approach to art history proposed by Aby Warburg especially considers into the historic analysis the early expressions of the ‘indomitable’ primitive states as anachronistic displays with a vocation to give meaning to the world. These expressions, just as the pictorial elements of the works of art, are able to offer both meaning and feeling regardless of the time or culture in which they are exhibited. I conclude with an analysis of the work of Colombian artist Debora Arango in which, following Warburg’s proposal, I trace the primitive and pagan features subject of the research of the Hamburg historian.
