Reproductive aspects of Akodon montensis (Rodentia, Muridae) and Artibeus lituratus (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) from forest areas in southeast of Brazil

Resumo: Este trabalho teve o objetivo de determinar os aspectos reprodutivos de Akodon montensis Thomas (1913) e Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818). A área de estudo localiza-se na Área de Proteção Especial Mutuca, no município de Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. O período de amostragem foi entre janeiro de 2001 e fevereiro de 2003. Indivíduos machos de A. montensis e A. lituratus foram capturados e sacrificados, e foram feitas análises histológicas e histométricas de suas gônadas. Foram capturados 24 animais da espécie A. montensis e de acordo com o desenvolvimento do processo espermatogênico, 12 foram considerados ativos, 11 recrudescentes e apenas um em repouso. O período reprodutivo coincidiu com a estação chuvosa e também com a maior oferta de recursos alimentares e o recrutamento ocorreu na estação seca, quando a precipitação e a oferta de recursos registradas foram mais baixas. O padrão observado para a espécie, também registrado por outros autores, sugere que fatores bióticos e climáticos e suas interações interferem diretamente na reprodução de A. montensis. Foram capturados 36 indivíduos de A. lituratus, e de acordo com a organização dos túbulos seminíferos, 33 foram considerados em atividade reprodutiva e apenas três foram registrados em repouso reprodutivo. Notou-se um pequeno aumento da atividade reprodutiva nos meses de setembro a novembro de 2002, porém, registrou-se atividade reprodutiva ao longo do ano, sendo considerados, portanto poliéstricos não sazonais. Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the reproductive characteristcs of Akodon montensis Thomas (1913) and Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818). The study was conducted at Área de Proteção Especial Mutuca, municipality of Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. During the period of collection (January, 2001 to February, 2003) males of A. montensis and A. lituratus were captured and sacrificed. Their gonads were submitted to histological and histometric analyses. It was captured 24 animals of the A. montensis species and in accordance to the organization of the seminiferous tubules, 12 specimens were considered active, 11 recrudescent and just one in the resting stage. The reproductive period coincided with the rainy season when also there was the highest availability of food. Recruitment occurred during the dry season, when the rainfall and the food availability were low. The pattern observed, which has also been observed by other authors, suggests that biotic and climatic factors and their interactions interfere directly in the reproduction of A. Montensis. A total of 36 specimens of A. lituratus were captured and according to the organization of the seminiferous tubules, 33 specimens were considered on reproductive activity and just three in the resting stage. A small increase in the reproductive activity was noticed from September to November 2002, however, it was registered all year around and therefore this species was considered poliestricus not seasonal.
