Educational use of podcasts in German as foreign language at secondary school -an example for adaptation of web listening materials into the lesson in context of 'Deutsche Welle'

Almanca yabancı dil dersinde A1 seviyesinde işitsel materyalin eksik olması, internette otantik ses kayıtlarının sunulmasına rağmen binlerce içerik arasından bunları bulmanın zor olması, nerede ne olduğunun bilinmiyor olması, var olan bu ses kayıtlarının niteliğinin ve derse uyumunun belirsizliği, bunları derste ek materyal olarak kullanabilmek için önce incelenmesi gerektiği, fakat bunun bilimsel anlamda yapılmasının önerilmesi; ayrıca bu kayıtların öğretmenler tarafından tanınmıyor olduğu için kullanılmıyor olması, bu çalışmanın odağındaki problemlerdir. İnternette sunulan Almanca yabancı dil içerikleri, çalışmanın evrenini; Deutsche Welle sitesinin Türkçe arayüzünde sunulan A1 seviyesindeki tüm Podcast’ler ise örneklemini oluşturmaktadır. A1 seviyesindeki otantik işitsel materyalleri derse kazandırarak var olan problemlerin çözümüne katkı sağlamak amacıyla bu çalışmada, söz konusu internet materyallerinin niteliğini ve müfredat ile uyumunu betimsel araştırma yöntemleri ve belgesel (doküman) analizi teknikleriyle belirleyip, Podcast gibi dijital medyanın derste kullanımına örnek bir ders planı geliştirmek hedeflenmiştir. Ders planının yanı sıra araştırma için geliştirilen veri toplama araçları, çalışmanın özgün değeridir. Örneklemin niteliğini betimlemek amacıyla geliştirilen veri toplama aracı ile önce Podcast’lerin niteliği ortaya konulup, ikinci aşamada bunların müfredat ile uyumuna dair geliştirilen veri toplama araçları ile analizler tamamlanmıştır. Yapılan analizlerde örneklemin %70’inin işitsel kalitesinin iyi olduğu, %23’ünün otantik iletişim durumlarını barındırdığı, %33’ünde iletişimin paraverbal öğelerinin otantik olduğu, %62’sinde konuşma hızının doğal olduğu, alıştırmaların %60’ının dinleme sonrasında çözülebileceği, alıştırmaların %59’unun dinleme metnin uzunluğuna uygun olduğu, %51’inde belli sıra gerekmeksizin ilerlenebileceği ve dinleme metninin yanında yer alan alıştırmaların bir istisna hariç, otantik olmadığı saptanmıştır. Belirlenen kriterlere göre örneklemin %34’ü müfredata tümüyle uyumlu olduğu, %35’inin derste işlenen konulara değinse de beklenen dilsel işlevleri karşılamadığı ve %31’nin müfredat ile uyum göstermediği tespit edilmiştir. Podcast’lerin müfredat ile uyum göstermediği durumlarda da bunların öğrenciler tarafından otonom öğrenme süreçlerine dahil edilmesi önerilmektedir. Ayrıca farklı kişi ve kuruluşlara yönelik öneriler, çalışmanın beşinci bölümünde bulgulardan çıkarılan sonuçlardan sonra sıralanmıştır. The focused problem of the study is the lack of authentic auditory A1 materials in German foreign language courses. Authentic podcasts are offered on the Internet, but it is difficult to find them among thousands of contents. It’s unknown, where which material is. In addition, the quality of the offered podcasts is not clear. Apart from that, their compatibility with the curriculum is also uncertain. In order to use them as supplementary material in the course, they first must be scientifically analyzed. Furthermore, they can’t be used, because podcasts are unknown for many teachers. The universe of the research is the educational content for teaching listening skills in German foreign language course. The sample of the research are all A1 Podcasts in the Turkish website of “Deutsche Welle”. In this study, it is aimed to bring authentic auditory A1 materials to the GFL courses and to contribute to solution of the existing problems. The aim of the research is to determine the quality of the sample and to determine their compatibility with the curriculum by using descriptive research methods and documentary (document) analysis techniques. The aim of the study is also to develop a course plan for the use of digital media like podcasts in the GFL lessons. In addition to the course plan, the data collection tools which are developed for this study, are the original value of this research. In the first step the quality of podcasts is described with the data collection tool for the quality of the sample. In the second stage, the analyzes were completed with the data collection tools which are developed for compatibility of podcasts with the curriculum. The analyses show us that 70% of the sample have good auditory quality, 23% contains authentic communication situations, in 33% of the Podcasts the paraverbal elements of communication are authentic, the speech rate of them is natural in 62%, 60% of the exercises can be solved after listening, 59% of the exercises were suitable for the length of the listening text, 51% of the exercises can be progressed without the need for a certain sequence and that the exercises next to the listening text are not authentic, with one exception. According to the determined criteria, 34% of the sample was found to be fully compatible with the curriculum. Although 35% of the sample include the topics of the curriculum, but the expected linguistic functions are missing. It was determined that 31% of the sample did not comply with the curriculum. In cases where the podcasts do not comply with the curriculum, it is recommended that they be included in the autonomous learning processes by the students.
