Abstract

Concrete was used as a building material due to the efforts of pioneers such as Francois Hennebique. In 1892 he took out a patent on his monolith concrete construction system. At the beginning of the 20th century an important amount of buildings were erected according to this construction principle. Nevertheless, parallel to the system of Hennebique, other systems were patented and used in this earlu period. We go deeper into the rehabilitation of three such buildings in Belgium: the former flour-mill (1902) in Overijse, the Brussels storage depot (1907) and the fabric warehouse Marchie-Pede (1909).
