Pathological biomineralization in humans - an example of kidney stones

Abstract
- Iz dobivenih 50 uzoraka bubrežnih kamenaca, od Medicinskog fakulteta Sveučilišta Josip Juraj Strossmayer, radila se analiza morfologije pomoću stereo – mikroskopa. Ciljano su se proučavali oblik, tekstura, boja te sjaj bubrežnih kamenaca. Dobiveni rezultati pokazuju da se u najvećem broju radi o kamencima smeđe boje, zaobljenog oblika, grube teksture te zemljanog sjaja. Vanjski izgled bubrežnih kamenaca nam izrazito malo može reći o njihovom mineralnom sastavu te kako bi se dobio cjelokupni uvid u njihovu građu, mineralogiju i način postanka, potrebno je proširiti istraživanja na veliki broj primjeraka. Ovaj rad predstavlja uvod za sva daljnja istraživanja potrebna za razumijevanje bubrežnih kamenaca koja će pomoći pri njihovom liječenju. From the obtained 50 samples of kidney stones from the Faculty of Medicine, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University, morphology analysis was performed using a stereo microscope. The shape, texture, color and luster of kidney stones were studied in a targeted manner. The obtained results show that most of them are brown stones, rounded in shape, rough in texture and earthy in luster. The external appearance of kidney stones can tell us very little about their mineral composition, and in order to gain an overall insight into their structure, mineralogy and method of origin, it is necessary to expand the research to a large number of specimens. This paper provides an introduction to all further research needed to understand kidney stones that will help in their treatment.
