Abstract

In this study we investigated the potential mutagenic effects of isoflurane in clinical concentrations. The study was performed on 20 patients who underwent different types of surgical intervention. Anaesthesia was induced with thiopentone and maintained with 1 % isoflurane. Vecuronium was used for muscular relaxation. The anaesthesia period was limited to 60 minutes. Venous blood samples were taken before anaesthetic inhalation, at the 15th and 60th minutes of anaesthesia, ten days after anaesthesia. The values of blood just before anaesthetic inhalation were used as the control. The venous samples were cultured within 72 hours and mutagenicity tests, mitotic index, sister chromatid exchange and replication index, were used for examination of the exchange of chromosomes and cell cycle. The values of mitotic index and replication index were significantly depressed (p0.05). In conclusion, we decided that short-term anaesthesia administration with isoflurane in clinical concentration has reversible mutagenic effect.
