Abstract

Firms in the supply chain have increasingly realized the importance of organizational learning to the basic survival and further development, but organizational learning faces internal and external com- plex environments. This study explores internal learning and external learning from supply chain internal complexity, upstream complexity and downstream complexity, and examines the impact of organizational learning on operational competency. Based on data collected from 317 high performance manufacturing (HPM) firms in ten countries, we propose and examine the model of "complexity - organizational learning - operational competency" by using the structured equation modeling method. The result shows that up- stream complexity is negatively related to both internal and external learning, and downstream complexity is negatively related to internal learning, while internal complexity has no significant impact on internal and external learning. Internal learning significantly improves delivery, innovation, customer service, while external learning significantly improves quality and customer service.
