Le mythe de Versailles (xviie-xixe siècle)

Versailles fut pendant les xviiie et xixe siècles le phare de l’Europe des cours. Non un paradigme, mais un mythe, élaboré par des strates successives de visiteurs étrangers, originaires principalement des mondes britanniques et germaniques. Se constitua ainsi un imaginaire fait de déférence envers un style de pouvoir, un mode de sociabilité, une esthétique du cadre de vie, puis peu à peu d’une recherche du temps perdu, nostalgie, ou simple curiosité. Le mythe ne fut pas uniquement construction mentale, il eut des effets concrets. L’instrumentalisation se retrouve dans le costume de cour espagnol comme dans la distribution des appartements palatiaux en Lorraine. Il peut enfin « se retourner », et passer d’une acception à son contraire, du positif au négatif si, comme dans l’exemple italien, on en suit le devenir sur le long terme. Abordé de l’extérieur, le mythe de Versailles fait la preuve de sa grande plasticité. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Versailles was a beacon in the Europe of the courts. It was not a paradigm, but a myth, developed by successive strata of foreign visitors, mostly from the British and German worlds. As a result, an imaginary construct developed consisting of deference to a style of power, a mode of socialising, an aesthetic of living environment, and then gradually a search for lost time, nostalgia or simple curiosity. The myth was more than just a mental construct, it had concrete effects. Its exploitation is reflected in Spanish court costume and in the arrangement of the palatial apartments in Lorraine. Finally, it could be inverted, going from acceptance to the opposite, from positive to negative if, as in the example of Italy, its progression is followed over the long term. Approached from the outside, the myth of Versailles proves to be highly malleable.
