Marcus Simaïka Pacha ou l’illustration de l’éducation des frères des écoles chrétiennes sur un copte-orthodoxe

Issu d’une famille de magistrats du Caire, Marcus Simaïka (1864-1944) réalise une brillante carrière professionnelle dans l’administration des chemins de fer, qui le porte sur les bancs du Conseil législatif puis du Conseil supérieur de l’enseignement dirigé alors par le futur leader nationaliste égyptien Saad Pacha Zaghloul. Il s’intéresse très tôt à l’histoire des chrétiens en Égypte et décide de s’investir pleinement dans la cause patrimoniale qui se joue en cette période autour de la communauté copte. En 1906, il est introduit comme membre du Comité de conservation des monuments de l’art arabe et prend part au projet de création du Musée copte dont il devient le premier directeur en 1908. En analysant l’instruction que Simaïka a reçu dans sa jeunesse auprès des lasalliens, on comprend l’incidence qu’a pu avoir cette scolarité francophone et catholique qui a contribué à sa reculturation. Attaché à la nation égyptienne autant qu’à la « nation copte », Simaïka maîtrise les codes des occupants britanniques et français qui lui permettent d’évoluer parmi les élites dirigeantes du pays et ainsi à faire entendre sa voix. Born into a family of magistrates in Cairo, Marcus Simaika (1864-1944) had a brilliant professional career in the administration of the railways, which brought him to the Legislative Council and then to the Superior Council of Education headed at the time by the future Egyptian nationalist leader Saad Pasha Zaghloul. Interested in the history of Christians in Egypt at a very early age, he decided to get fully involved in the heritage cause that was being played out at that time around the Coptic community. In 1906, he was introduced as a member of the Comité de conservation des monuments de l’art arabe, and took part in the creation of the Coptic Museum launched a few years earlier becoming its first director in 1908. By analysing the instruction Simaika received as a young man from the Lasallians, we can understand the impact that this French-speaking and Catholic schooling may have had, contributing to his reculturation. Attached to the Egyptian nation as much as he was to the “Coptic nation,” Simaika mastered the codes of the British and French occupiers which enabled him to evolve among the country’s ruling elite and make his voice heard.
