Abstract

HIV infection and disease are determined to a large extent by the host's immune response. Exposure to the virus alone does not lead necessarily to long-lasting infection and the progress of HIV infection once established varies in different individuals. The development of host immunity, while either "protective" or "enhancing," will determine all these outcomes.
