Abstract

This article explores “monstrosity” as both referring to diverse subjectivities transgressing socio-cultural normativities (from queer diversity to counter-ageist, -ableist and colonialist-Western paradigms) and a methodological tool that invites emotionality, and navigating positionalities throughout research encounters. We propose a monstrous dialogue as a tool for engaging with the monstrous qualities of the research process, and propose values and orientations for practicing monstrous reflexivity and positionality to (re)configure research processes. Drawing from queer and transfeminist authors, this paper is a contribution to the conversation on monstrosity as the archetype of otherness and “other” ways of conducting research while/through narrating the self.
