Abstract

This present article proposes a journey into the historical evolution of the two art forms that stood at the foundation of the lyrical performance: music and theatre, shaping their trajectory in different times and cultures. Music and theater have been coexisting in a relationship of interference since before the assertion of self-specific awareness, they have performed and complemented each other in syncretic manifestations. The birth of the opera as a musical-theatrical genre at the end of the 16th century reflects the large-scale creation of the Renaissance artistic and intellectual movements and signifies the fullness of a cultural-artistic assertion acquired over the course of many centuries.
