Abstract
- Background: the rehabilitation of patients with atrophic maxillas is almost impossible as the retention of the conventional prostheses is not fulfilled, so the implant-supported ones are the solution for this problem. Objective: to describe the results of the implantological treatment in patients with atrophic maxillas and retention problems with the conventional prosthesis, attended to at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General Teaching Hospital of Cienfuegos, from September 2014 to April 2016.Methods: a prospective, descriptive study was conducted on a group of 41 patients with atrophic maxillas, to whom two ball-and-socket implants were placed, at the department of maxillofacial surgery of the aforementioned hospital and during the period herein declared. The variables included age, sex, length, diameter, osseointegration, prosthesis use and results. Results: there was a prevalence of the male sex (56,1 %) and of the 60 to 69 age group (46,3 %). There was osseointegration of the implants in almost their totality (94,3 %). The mostly used length was 10 mm (70,1 %) where most of the implant failures were concentrated. The diameter of 3,2 mm was successful in 51,7 % of the implants. Most of the patients reported using the prosthesis all the time (90,2 %), accepting the treatment received for having fulfilled their expectations and describing it as good. Conclusions: the treatment with implant-supported prostheses in total toothless people with atrophic maxillas was effective.
