Abstract

In Brazil, extensive wildlife management only became possible in the 2000s, with the publication of the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC). A project for structuring community management of caimans in the Amazonas State was started in 2003 and officially implemented for commercial purposes in 2020. The objective of this work is to characterize the analysis model of community management of caimans in Amazonas and to propose it as a model of analysis of community management systems for other species. A documentary analysis of the legislation regarding the community management of caiman was carried out, from which the technical requirements for management development were then identified. For each element, the activities related to their service were described. These activities were ordered according to their insertion in a model of Agro-Systems (AGS). Management requirements are met from eight basic technical-scientific activities or services, each directly related to one or more segments of the production chain. The management of caimans presents a great number of scientific requirements, sharing of management functions, and productive potential predetermined by the allowed catch quota. The precarious infrastructure for processing, storage, and transportation is the main limitation of production in protected areas. The requirements for the management of caimans are based on the basic principles of sustainability and should be present in laws in a similar way for the use of other species. Thus, AGS analysis may be applicable for community management of other species, as it includes normative elements, participating actors, and the environment, with equal importance to productive and economic efficiency.
