Abstract

The depreciation of domestic work in Brazil causes sexism, racism, and class differences to intersect. Historically, Brazilian law has considered domestic work as a subcategory. The role of the collective organization of these female workers has been fundamental in addressing the disagreement over how domestic work is socially understood. In addition, it played an essential role in the resistance against the withdrawal of rights. This article aims to give these female workers a voice, and to record their understanding of work and care. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the concept of work is provided, including for unpaid care. In addition, the interviews convey both a need for the appreciation of domestic work and the awareness that “domestic work is the basis of society.”
