Fire

I comment on the very wide range of topics — social, cultural, aesthetic, and technological — generated by the theme of fire in the nineteenth century. I consider them through the lens of Gaston Bachelard’s poetics of fire (The Psychoanalysis of Fire) and Michael Faraday’s science (The Chemical History of a Candle), a modern work and a nineteenth-century text.
