Abstract
- Arid regions, such as the headwaters of the Atacama Desert in southern Peru and northern Chile, are the most sensitive areas to climate change. It seeks to establish future water availability in the ecosystems of this region, based on climate change and geological alterations. Methodologically, an exhaustive review of research reports in the study region is used. The Atacama Desert is considered one of the driest regions in the world. Climate change overcomes economic, commercial and political decisions, has an impact on many aspects of human activities and is a determining factor in economic activities, assigning it an economic value. Rainfall in this region has evolved favorably, there are records of water accumulations in the form of small lagoons, which represents a significant change in the water availability of this arid region. In the future, according to the trend of this behavior, it is expected that the water availability is favorable, it is likely that areas of hills with pastures and shrubs are activated, evidences that normally occur in the southern region of Peru, in some wet years, it is provided by favorable conditions for livestock activity in the region.
