Abstract
- The freshwater fish fauna of New Amarambalam Reserve Forest (NARF) in the Southern Western Ghats (Kerala) is constituted by 43 species belonging to 13 families and 28 genera. Family Cyprinidae dominated with 20 species followed by Balitoridae and Bagridae (four species each). NARF may harbour higher freshwater fish species diversity than in protected areas in North Kerala. The area around Maanchery in the Karimpuzha tributary of River Chaliyar needs to be designated as a priority area for freshwater fish conservation.
