The Company You Keep: The Court of Justice Confirms Sanctions Against Persons Associated with Zimbabwe Regime

(Series Information) European Papers - A Journal on Law and Integration, 2016 1(3), 1279-1281 | European Forum Highlight of 4 November 2016 | (Abstract) On 28 July 2016 the Court of Justice dismissed an appeal brought by the former Attorney General of Zimbabwe and 120 other persons against the judgment of the General Court of 22 April 2015 that had declared lawful the adoption of EU restrictive measures against them on the basis of their association with the Government of Zimbabwe, in which they held senior posts. With this judgment, the Court approved the EU's strategy of applying restrictive measures to exert pressure on a country's regime by targeting individuals that form part of the national economic and security elite.
