Abstract
- Laura Spence, a state-school pupil who sparked a row in 2000 about university elitism when she was rejected by Oxford University despite predictions that she would receive A grades at A level, has come back to the UK to study medicine after spending four years at Harvard University studying biochemistry. Spence urges other British sixth form students to consider applying for places at universities in the United States, noting that there are a number of forms of financial aid available for students who do make this choice.
