Abstract

The role of DpgA, which is a bacterial type III polyketide synthase (PKS), is studied. The implications for the catalytic mechanism of this type III PKS enzyme and its role as a gatekeeper enzyme for shunting the primary metabolite malonyl-CoA to a nonproteinogenic amino acid are discussed.
