Abstract

The Audit Bureau of Circulations' (ABC) FAS-FAX report documented a continued decline in circulation of the country's largest newspapers. 'USA Today' is a remarkable exception, with an increase of over 111,000 in daily sales and a separate Friday count that is larger than any US Sunday paper. The New York 'Daily News' gained back circulation lost during a 1990-1991 strike but was exempted from the ABC audit. Statistics from various metropolitan markets demonstrate that newspaper shut-downs or mergers cause many subscribers to drop out of daily reading rather than switch to another paper.<br />Daily newspaper sales are continuing to fall across the country, according to the latest FAS-FAX report from the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
