Abstract

A study is conducted on the melting behavior of a horizontal ice cylinder submerged in quiescent saline water with a salinity level of 3.5 wt% for ambient room temperatures between 2.8 to 20.3 degrees Celcius. Results show there is laminar bidirectional flow at the lower part of the melting cylinder and a turbulent unidirectional flow at the upper portion. It was also observed that melting velocity increases with an increase in ambient fluid temperature.
