Abstract

Two contrasting architectural practices based in the Dundee area of Scotland are described. Nicoll Russell Studios has a staff of 25 with four partners. Its work is locally based but the practice is moving into international markets. It has no recognisable house style but values design and enters competitions. James F Stephen has a staff of 16 with two partners. It works locally and has a clear style based on the use of stone, slate and stained timber. It has a youthful atmosphere and is committed to training.
