Abstract

Exotic species like the dangerous hitchhikers are leaving an unprecedented trail of ecological destruction, human misery and economic loss, and are moving about freely on a global scale as unintended cargo of trade and travel. One Cornell University report estimates that nonnative species currently are costing US taxpayers more than $137 billion a year.
