Stereocontrolled total synthesis of a polyfunctional carotenoid, peridinin

An efficient and convergent total synthesis of the polyfunctional carotenoid peridinin was achieved by controlling the stereochemistry of six asymmetric carbons and geometry of seven double bonds in the molecule. This synthesis focuses on the stereocontrolled preparation of the common intermediate utilizing sharpless asymmetric epoxidation under restrictedly optimized conditions.
