Planning post-Rio

The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro took place in June 1992. It was attended by 10,000 people from 178 countries, and it aimed to set the world agenda on environmental issues. Its impact on planning was felt in the UK, where planners feel themselves to be pre-eminent in environmental matters. The Rio summit was seen by some observers as an opportunity to try to align economic development with environmental standards.
