Abstract
- Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice implantedwith human fetal tissue can support the replication of human cytomegaloviruses (CMV). An investigation was conducted to determine whether the SCID-hu system could provide a model for human CMV infections and to identify the cellular targets of CMV. The results showed that SCID-hu mice could provide a good modelsystem for human CMV infections. The virus targeted the epithelial cells of thethymic medulla. Experiments also showed that ganciclovir is an effective suppressant of CMV replication in the tissue implant.
