Intra- vs intermolecular photoinduced electron transfer reactions of a macrocyclic donor-acceptor dyad

The simple alkyl linked systems are investigated for their propensity toward intramolecular exciplex formation and the subsequent charge-transfer interaction of their excited states. The magnitude of the electronic coupling between donor and acceptor is found to be strongly influenced by increasing the length of the alkyl chain linker.
