Abstract

Rise in serious injuries amongst cheerleaders raises concerns especially after the death of a 14-year old Ashley Burns. Parents are lobbying for greater regulation but the problem arises when the federation cannot force states to abide by the rules because some states classify cheerleading as a sport, triggering strict requirements such as access to an athletic trainer, and other states treat it as a more loosely governed activity.
