Abstract
- Thousands of Hispanics, both legal residents from other states and freshly arrived illegal immigrants from south of the border, have rushed to New Orleans to take construction jobs and are likely to fundamentally remake the city's demographic and cultural landscape. According to the 2000 Census, before Katrina only 3% of New Orleanians were Hispanic and 67 percent African-American, however, after evacuation, many AfricanAmericans may have left for good.
