Abstract

A Gallup poll conducted Aug 9-16, 1993 found that Canadian support for regional development spending is down but remains strong. Of those polled, 38% said the government should increase spending, down from 56% in 1992 and 61% in 1991. Eleven percent feel that spending should be decreased, while 41% approve of the amount of money the federal government is investing in such programs. Over half of those polled said that equal access to jobs for people new to a region is fair. One-quarter said that the government should be involved in issues such as assistance to the unemployed in poor regions.
