Abstract
- Winter habitat use patterns of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northern Idaho were studied to investigate the hypothesis that snow cover can be used to predict winter habitat selection. A model is developed to predict winter habitat selection using snow depth and an assessment of a number of other factors that might influence habitat selection. Results suggest habitat selection can be forecast from seasonal changes in deer basal metabolism combined with forage availabilty and energy expenditure related to snow cover. Deer management implications are considered.
