Abstract
- Peru is now regaining a fragile confidence, following a decade of economic collapse and violence. The recovery is due to the economic programme of president Albert Fujimori, which has boosted investor confidence. Fujimori's plans include privatisations and reform of labour laws. The economy has now begun to revive, but the government is faced with severe economic and social problems, and also a fight against terrorism. Peru's economy and politics are further discussed in a special report which looks at the stock exchange, the army, politics, mining, infrastructure, anti-drugs policy and links with Japan.
